Its ancient origins date back to the fifth century. a.C., when the Sicilian Motyka became part of the territory dominated by the tyrant Gelone. The Romans finally conquered it in 212 BC. and the Arabs, arrived in the ninth century, gave it the name of Mohac, developing its trade and agriculture. The successive Norman invaders gave the city the title of County, remained until 1927, with the creation of the province of Ragusa.
Even Modica, like all the towns of the Val di Noto, was completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1693 and rebuilt again with beautiful buildings and churches of Baroque style.
Modica, like Ragusa, is also divided into "high" and "low" because of the conformation modeled by the orography of the iblean plateau.
Absolute masterpiece is the Church of S. Giorgio, placed on top of a spectacular staircase.
Modica is also the city of chocolate. Famous all over the world, it owes its uniqueness to a grainy consistency, almost crude appearance, which preserves intact all the characteristics of cocoa.
A few kilometers from Modica, the Ispica Caves combine great landscape, history and archaeology. Long used as a neolithic burial site from the early Bronze Age, the caves were later transformed into cave dwellings in the Middle Ages.
