The Cathedral of Monreale is a real gem of Sicily, overlooking the slopes of Mount Caputo, a few kilometers from Palermo.

Legend has it that the founder, Roger II, dreamed of discovering a treasure hidden under a carob tree at whose feet he had fallen asleep. In case the dream came true, he promised to build a temple in honor of the Saviour, and so the Cathedral was born.
The most extraordinary feature of this building is the incredible mosaic decoration that winds along the entire inner perimeter of the church, with the precious tiles are set in gold.
In the apse, stands out the representation of Christ Pantocrator, a complex figuration celebrating the triumph of Christianity.
The Benedictine Cloister, dating back to the time of William II, is another masterpiece of art and architecture.
A square portico, supported by 228 columns with oval arches. It is decorated with polychrome mosaic inlays, arabesques, reliefs and golden mosaics, offering a breathtaking spectacle.
